STA have produced an insight document to inform members of the Building Safety Act 2023. The act is now in force and was originally intended to influence the way the UK construction industry works in what was described as High Risk Residential Buildings. That is those buildings that have multiple occupancy and are over two storeys high. Since the launch STA have seen a more general uptake of the Safety Act being applied to all types of building included single family homes as there are many aspects in the act that would result in safer buildings. If you are asked to engage in a contract that has all or some of the act attached to it we would recommend consulting with the STA guide first.

Eurocode 5 Update
The STA and Milner Associates have been working with British and European standards organisations (BSI and CEN) to ensure that the second generation of Eurocode 5 (design of timber structures) is aligned with UK construction practices. Of particular importance is the new fire part of Eurocode 5, which is likely to be published in 2026, and will allow designers to calculate the fire resistance of timber frame and mass timber wall, floor and roof assemblies rather than rely solely on tests. The calculation approach yields conservative results compared to fire resistance testing but has obvious benefits in terms of cost and time. STA will keep you posted as to how this progresses.
