Timber Frame Competency Award Scheme

The STA has turned the insurance markets opinion of the Timber Sector from a misconceived misunderstanding to a positive outlook, because of the Innovation and Best Practice that STA Members operate to.

With STA Assure and now the STA Erectors Structural Timber Frame Competency Award Scheme, insurers such as Allianz, Aspen, Axa, Aviva and Zurich are advising they are prepared to recognise companies compliant with the scheme, as it shows good Corporate Governance, Risk Management and potential policyholders trying to mitigate their loses.

We have seen recently the appearance on Construction Proposal Forms from insurers actually asking for membership of the STA, and whether they are practicing within the membership guidelines i.e. 16 steps and STA Assure etc as time progresses and the Timber Frame Competency Award Scheme gathers momentum we foresee this adding further weight to STA Assure.

Timber Frame Competency Award Scheme Requirements:STA_Timber_Frame_Workbooks_Erector_Installer_logo

It will be a mandatory requirement for all STA manufacturer members to only use assured STA member erectors/installers by January 2019. We must therefore ensure that a minimum of 66% of your erector/installer workforce are accredited through this scheme by January 2019 and any new erector/installer employees going forward should undertake this scheme as part of their training. Once this date has passed, you will no longer be able to use erectors/installers that are not accredited through this scheme.

We have developed this training programme with CITB to provide recognition of the skills and competences of existing timber frame erectors together with raising the skill levels of any unskilled or untrained timber frame erectors to an acceptable level of competence which will also support the S/NVQ achievement and CSCS registration process.

The programme will also provide career paths for timber frame erectors and assist young entrants to the timber frame industry. Over time the intention is to allow only those erectors who are qualified to erect timber frame buildings.

The Detail:

Are you eligible to participate in the Timber Frame Competency Award Scheme?

If you comply with the above criteria, CLICK HERE to complete the REGISTRATION FORM >>

Once you have completed the registration form, you will be able to access the Timber Frame Competency Award Scheme via the members area - click here to login. If you are having problems, accessing your members area, please contact

Once logged in, you will be able to complete all the stages, which includes:

  • Download the Workbooks
  • Upload supporting evidence i.e. CV, client witness testimonies etc
  • Request access to the online tests
  • Complete the online tests
  • Request your certificate of completion

If you have experience in Timber Frame Erection (Minimum 1 year) – Experienced workers or new entrants with no existing N/SVQ, or individuals registered, working towards or having completed an approved Timber Frame Erection apprenticeship programme. Download and complete the three workbooks. Get supervisor sign-off, to confirm that the workbooks have been completed and the erector/installer is ready to take the STA online test. Provide evidence to prove that the employee has met the minimum ‘timber frame erection experience’ requirements.

If you hold an existing S/NVQ in Timber Frame Erection or S/NVQ in Wood occupations/Carpentry and Joinery, you do not need to complete the workbooks but you will need to provide:

  • S/NVQ unique certificate number - for an example of this click here to download an example certificate
  • Up to date curriculum vitae (CV)

NB: These documents can be uploaded via the 'Upload supporting evidence' link on your dashboard.

If you do NOT hold an existing N/SVQ and have experience in Timber Frame Erection (Minimum 1 year) you will need to complete the three workbooks, these include:

  • Practical Skills Workbook
  • Knowledge Skills Workbook
  • Health and Safety Skills Workbook

You will need to download these workbooks from your member dashboard which are in PDF format and complete the tasks asked of you. You must record the information/your findings on your hard copies and these completed documents must be retained in the event of your company being audited for STA Assure.

Please note some of the tasks in your workbooks may require your manager/supervisor to witness and sign off.

You also need to provide:

  • Up to date curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Supporting evidence to prove the erector installer has a minimum 1 years’ timber frame erection experience (e.g. employer/client witness testimony, witnessed work log showing your name, timber frame erection activities undertaken and the dates the work was undertaken).

NB: These documents can be uploaded via the 'Upload supporting evidence' link on your dashboard.

If you hold an existing S/NVQ or have completed your workbooks, you will need to log on to your dashboard using your unique username and password and 'request access to the online tests'.

Your supervisor will receive an email asking them to confirm you have completed the workbooks to a satisfactory level (or you hold the relevant qualifications) and once they have clicked on the link, you will be notified by email that the online tests have been added to your dashboard.

You will have 48 hours to complete all three online tests and at the end of each module you will receive your score, please see below percentage brackets:

  • 100% - 85% = Pass
  • 84% - 75% = Resit required
  • 74% - 0% = Fail

NB: If a resit is required, you have the opportunity straight after your test to re-answer questions you got wrong.

Upon successful demonstration of stand-alone competence, competence/experience or experience and completion of the three silver workbooks, and successful completion of the online tests, all requirements of the STA Timber Frame Competency Award Scheme will have been met.

A completion certificate will automatically be generated and you can download this from your dashboard.

NB: Achievement of the TFCAS Award will form part of the STA Assure process from January 2018. For STA Assure audit purposes, all TFCAS documentation, including S/NVQ certification, timber frame erection experience evidence, completed workbooks and TFCAS award certification, must be retained and made available to STA auditors upon request.

Supporting S/NVQ Achievement
Erectors/installer employees wishing to achieve the N/SVQ in Timber Frame Erection and gain the CSCS blue skilled worker card will be able to use the completed workbooks to support the skills and knowledge requirements of the N/SVQ qualification.

Note: STA preference would be for new entrants, where possible, to gain the STA TFCAS Award through the completion of an approved timber frame erection apprenticeship programme.
