The Structural Timber Association has developed in partnership with CITB and Edinburgh Napier University a series of designer workbooks to provide validation of the skills and competences of experienced timber frame fabrication designers, together with raising the skill levels of young entrants to the timber frame industry.

The Design Workbooks have been produced as a series of training modules covering Health and Safety, Knowledge and Practical Skills, which can be completed in the workplace or as part of a college based learning programme. The workbooks are aimed at timber frame fabrication designers and include the key responsibilities for specifying timber frame components in accordance with the architects’ drawings and the timber frame manufacturing systems. The modules cover topics relevant to building design, to ensure that timber frame fabrication designers are aware of the context of their work. Sections include but are not limited to, drawing office interface and procedures, multi-storey timber frame buildings, engineering, differential movement, fire prevention, risk assessment and management.
